Polonnaruwa, a World Heritage site, a former capital of Sri Lanka 11th to 12th century. A.D., the Gal Vihare comprises of four colossal statues of the Buddha carved out of the living rock stand testimony to the skill of master craftsmen. The vast man made lake that is the 'Sea of Parakrama' - a feat of ancient engineering. Polonnaruwa is home to the Macaque Monkeys even now since human occupation and have continued to live in the ruins.

There are 2 annual pageants or Perahera of Religious and Cultural importance, the Esala Perahera which takes place in Kandy for 10 days in July/August and the Nawam Perahera which takes place in Colombo for 2 days in February/March.

The Perahera is officially inaugurated when the sacred relics are paraded around the area of the temple in a gilded casket placed on a majestic tucker accompanied by gaily caparisoned Elephants, dancers, drummers, torch bearers, whip crackers, torch spinners.
